Ten year and five yearly majors

EWP major inspections and AS 2550.10.

A major inspection is a strip down and assessment of the critical components. It is not a bigger service, and it cannot be priced honestly as if nothing will be found.

AS 2550.10 requires a major inspection when an elevating work platform reaches ten years of service, and every five years after that. Aerial Platform Solutions carries out major inspections and rebuilds in its Darch workshop in Perth, for machines from across Western Australia: strip down, non destructive testing, full electrical and hydraulic testing, repairs, reassembly and the final report.

What a major covers

The scope.

Every major is scoped for the machine in front of us. In general it covers:

  • Machine history, manufacturer requirements and the inspection plan
  • Strip down, cleaning and access to the critical components
  • Non destructive testing of critical components
  • Full electrical testing and hydraulic testing
  • Structural assessment and any manufacturer upgrades
  • Mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and fabrication repairs
  • Reassembly, settings, load test, function test and the final report

How we run a major

Three stages, no surprises.

01

Scope the major

We identify the machine, its history, how deep the inspection needs to go and the costs that can be known before the strip down.

02

Strip down and inspect

Critical components are dismantled, cleaned where needed, tested and recorded. This is where hidden defects show up.

03

Repair and rebuild

Findings are priced and approved before the repair, reassembly, settings, testing and paperwork.

Run properly, documented properly.

A major is the job where shortcuts cost the most. This is how we approach it.

Approval first

You approve the extra work

We report what the strip down finds before the repair bill grows.

Common questions

Major inspection questions.

When is a major inspection due?

Under AS 2550.10, an EWP needs a major inspection once it reaches ten years of service, and then every five years after that. Missing history, major damage, modifications or manufacturer requirements can bring it forward.

What does a major inspection involve?

A strip down of the machine, assessment of the critical components, non destructive testing, full electrical testing and hydraulic testing, then the repairs, reassembly, settings and final testing, with the paperwork to show it was done.

Why can the final price change after the strip down?

Because worn, cracked or damaged components can be hidden until the machine is dismantled. We price what can be known up front, then report what the strip down finds and get your approval before the repair grows.

Do you also do the routine 90 day and annual inspections?

Yes. Routine and annual inspections are covered on our Servicing and Maintenance page, and we can schedule them across a whole fleet.

Can you do a major on any brand?

Yes. We carry out major inspections across all the major EWP brands, and we are the Skyjack dealer and service agent for WA and an authorised Genie and Sinoboom service provider.

Is a major due on your machine?

Make, model, serial number, location and what the machine is doing. Give us that and we can give you a useful next step.
